I’ve thought a lot about how liberal democracy has been shaped by Christianity, and it unsettles me to see how our world is increasingly rejecting both the democracy and its Christian foundation. But God Himself remains the same, and if my allegiance is to Him, though the world is shaken I won’t lose my balance.

And I don’t have to let this rejection disturb me. What are the plots of the rulers of this world? God will judge it and them. “When I choose the proper time, I will judge uprightly.” (Psalms 75:2 NKJV)

Lean on God’s Word! Give it authority in your life, rest in it, and stake your future on it. How can our devotion be pure unless we’ve learned to let go of that which can be shaken anyways?

Tim Keller points out it’s not the strength of our faith, but the object of that faith that counts; and that it’s not about trying harder to believe, but the transferring of trust from self to God: not trying hard to have believe but rather a change of allegiance. Maybe that’s why choosing to make His Word my guide settles me so much. I can choose to trust God rather than my own fallen perspective, and that is where my rest is found. This is why knowing what the Bible teaches is so important. It is a guide to God’s heart, even though it goes against much of what the world teaches as right.
